In a family of 6, there aren’t many foods that are healthy, inexpensive, and loved equally by everyone. Our staple, applesauce. We make it ourselves for less than $8 and it produces at least 4 full jars. This month we made it and instead of filling our jars, we filled one jar and 10 Nourish pouches! But I’m getting ahead of myself, let me first share our family “secret” recipe!
You’ll need 20 apples. I like a mixed variety. In this batch, we used Jonagold and Empire. Our favorite combo yet has been Jonathan’s and Smokehouse.
Next, peel and core the apples. My biggest girls like to assist with this.
Put the apple pieces into a slow cooker.
Then pour 3/4 cup of water and 1/2 tsp of salt.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 5-6 hours. When it is finished it will look lumpy but be very mushy when stirred. We like it this consistency, but for my 10 month old baby and our fabulously new Nourish pouches, we need it smooth! So, take an immersion blender to the applesauce. However, I recommend waiting for it to cool down just a bit.
Now it’s time to add the remaining ingredients, which are most likely right in your kitchen! You’ll need 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, 1 tbsp on vanilla, and 2 tbsp of light brown sugar, then the juice of one half a lemon. Make sure you pick out the seeds before mixing it into your delicious applesauce!
After stirring the ingredients all together, I then portion half of it out for the baby. I filled 5 Blue Chevron Nourish bags for the baby. Then I stirred in 1/4 cup of honey (babies under 1 should not ingest honey). Stirred it up again and then filled up 5 more Nourish bags and a jar.
After swimming practice the next day, my daughters were all eager to snack on THEIR applesauce from our new reusable Orange Creamsicle pouches! I am so excited for this new tradition and way of enjoying the fruits of our labor.
