We’re sure most moms can agree: pregnancy and childbirth can wreak some serious havoc on your body. Some days, looking in the mirror feels like staring at a stranger with a tummy “pooch” and breasts that are drooping. That’s why many women who hope to reclaim their pre-baby body look into surgical mommy makeovers.
It’s especially important to have a supportive doctor and team when you’re considering a multi-procedure makeover. In our area, board certified plastic surgeons Drs. Brian K. Reedy and Scott C. Lindsay are known for their expertise in these procedures, as well as for warm and attentive patient care. They’ve provided us with this nice primer on mommy makeovers.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
“Mommy makeover” is a broad term for the customized set of procedures and treatments to improve the areas of your body most impacted by pregnancy and childbirth. Every mommy makeover is different; we design an individual treatment plan for each patient based on their unique concerns, natural anatomy, and desired outcome.
Most often, the main goal of a mommy makeover is to address the two primary areas of concern for most moms: 1) drooping and loss of breast fullness; and 2) loose, excess skin and stubborn fat on the lower abdomen (the “pregnancy pooch”). Other procedures and nonsurgical treatments may be included based on the needs of the patient.
Typical Mommy Makeover Procedures
Most mommy makeovers include one or more of the following procedures:
Breast lift, with or without augmentation, is often recommended to help improve the appearance of breasts that have begun to sag or have reduced upper breast fullness after milk production stopped and breast size returned to normal. A breast lift removes excess skin and lifts the breasts and areolas, resulting in a more youthful shape and perkier position. To restore lost volume, a breast lift with augmentation may also be recommended; the placement of breast implants can further improve breast shape and fullness.
Tummy tuck surgery (Abdominoplasty) is the most effective way to combat excess, sagging skin on the lower abdomen and repair separated abdominal muscles. As your tummy expands to accommodate a growing baby, your skin isn’t the only thing impacted—many women experience the painful, permanent separation of the abdominal muscles, known as diastasis recti. This not only makes toning the area difficult, it can also cause quite a bit of discomfort. A tummy tuck repairs these muscles, removes excess skin, and tightens remaining skin for a smoother abdomen.
Liposuction can be performed either in conjunction with a tummy tuck to enhance the shape of your results, or alone on other areas of the body where excess fat has accumulated after pregnancy, such as the hips or back. You might not be thinking of your upper hips or back as a problem spot, but recontouring these forgotten areas can almost magically balance your curves out, giving you a slimmer middle and emphasizing the curves you actually want—thus creating the classic and coveted hourglass feminine shape. That said, liposuction is great for getting rid of any areas of fat that haven’t budged with a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. During the procedure, fat cells are permanently removed, meaning you can enjoy your results for as long as you maintain a healthy weight.
Is a Mommy Makeover Right for Me?
The best way to determine what procedures or treatments will benefit you most is to discuss your options with a board certified plastic surgeon. To give you an idea if a mommy makeover might be right for you, ask yourself these questions:
1. Do I feel self-conscious with the size or shape of my breasts after pregnancy?
2. Is it difficult to feel confident in certain clothes because of excess skin on my stomach?
3. Am I unhappy about extra fat that just doesn’t go away with diet and exercise?
4. Have post-baby shape changes made me feel bashful in the bedroom?
5. Am I in overall good health and at or near my ideal body weight?
If you answered yes to two or more, a mommy makeover may be able to provide you with the results you want.
