I have 4 children, 5.5 years apart. Most people say “wow, you have your hands full”. My reaction is typically “yes, but my heart is even more full”! Really though, there are days my mind is full. My mind is full of all of the questions and worries and wonders about motherhood! My oldest is 6.5 and going into 1st grade. There is so much uncharted territory we are about to embark on: full-day schooling, social dramas, health and physical changes. But the biggest territory in HER world, dental changes!
I kid you not, my daughter is keeping tabs on all of her friends and neighbors and who is losing the most teeth, who has wiggly ones, who has had a cavity, and the MOST exciting thing, who is getting braces and what color bands did they choose! HA! To be a kid….
Thankfully, I found an amazing orthodontist in the area who has really educated me about these “super fun teeth happenings” coming down the pike. First off, I learned that children should get their first orthodontic check up by age 7. Oh boy was my 6.5 year old psyched when I told her I scheduled an appointment for her at a “second type of dentist” over winter break. She loves the dentist, so this is the cherry on top! Early detection of orthodontic issues is important to avoid difficult treatment later in life. Basically, take the time now to save time and money later, love it.
Orthodontic treatment is good for a healthy smile and also results in more self-confidence in people. And our children deserve all of the opportunities to maintain great self-confidence as possible.
