Do your kids love Trolls? How about Star Wars? Disney theme parks? Cirque du Soliel? Disney Junior? Then head out to Twirl in Newtown Square this summer for super cool themed camps.
Former Disney dancer and Twirl owner, Sam Sinns, has created a lineup of half-day summer camps that will be packed with fun for all ages. “I’ve had a great time creating camp themes that are near and dear to my heart,” says Sam with a smile. “So I guess it won’t be a surprise to find out that a lot of our camps are Disney related. We have Junior Disney, Under the Sea, Theme Park Mania, and Awaken the Force: Galactic Rebel Training Camp.”
The camps all have a performance element and use the specific themes as a context to expose students to different aspects of theatre arts. The Cirque du Twirl camp will be a week where kids will train in acrobatics and circus skills like juggling and clowning. Boys and girls will have a blast at Awaken the Force: Galactic Rebel Training Camp where they will learn basics of stage combat with lightsaber battles and also have fun acting out scenes from the Star Wars movies. Theme Park Mania will give kids a taste of what it’s like to entertain at the Happiest Place on Earth with parade dance routines, a musical number from a mainstage show, and scenes performed by theme park actors. And in what’s proving to be the most popular camp, Trolls will be an experience of dancing, acting, and all things Trolls. There is also Dance Vacation Bible School in the mix.
When planning for the summer, there has been much attention to making all camps pertinent to both boys and girls. “Twirl’s motto is ‘All for dance. Dance for all,’ which means that no one is excluded,” explains Sam. “I know princess camps will sell, but we’re not about that. That’s why I’m making sure that choreography and crafts in the Trolls camp will be fun for both girls and boys, and that all kids who want to be a Jedi warrior will feel like they have a place in our Awaken the Force camp.” Sam runs his dance studio with the same sensitivity. He remarks, “I guess that’s why I currently have 21 male students, which is really cool considering a lot of dance schools have no boy students at all!”
Twirl has structured its camp schedule to accommodate families with different summer plans. There is a three-day preschool camp from July 5-7 for those who will be in town for the 4th of July holiday, and there are two camps scheduled for the week of August 28- Sept. 1 for families with children who start school after Labor Day.
Twirl is also offering an early bird summer discount. All families who register for camps before March 31 will receive a 10% discount on camp tuition.*
