Needles + Kids = Nightmare! BUT NOT ANYMORE!

May 12, 2017 By Melissa A. Leave a Comment

This March my daughter got really sick.  We saw many specialists in our area, but then at the end of March we decided to make the trip to a well known hospital for children in Delaware.  The specialist there sent my 6 year old for bloodwork.  MORE bloodwork.  And as soon as the word was mentioned, she went into hysterics.  We’d been to the local lab for blood draws so many times, the last one not being so pleasant, that she was at the point of being traumatized.  While I tried to relax her anxieties, we just held hands and hoped it would be over fast.

But then everything changed, for the better.  The phlebotomist called us back and saw how upset my daughter was.  She showed her BUZZY and asked if we wanted to try it, because it was a drug-free pain reliever.  We definitely wanted to try it!  As she put it on her arm, I started to remember that I’d heard of this before.  Do you watch Shark Tank?  It was featured on there!  I’m so impressed that this local hospital is supporting this entrepreneurs brilliant invention!

Buzzy was strapped to my daughters arm, then was flicked on, creating a vibration.  This vibration is intended to confuse the brain.  Vibration and ice create different sensations. The medical concept is called gate control – when you send more motion information and cold information through the brain’s “gate”, only the strongest sensations get through. This is like when a dentist jiggles a jaw, or when you bang your hand with a hammer and shake it, or rub a bumped elbow. You’re sending more motion information to the brain, and the pain gets stopped at the gate.  Fantastic, right?  It works!  My crying 6 year old said “oh, what’s that?” as they were taking the needle OUT of her arm.  She never said “ouch”, she never flinched, she didn’t even notice she was injected!  For real!

So I went right to the website to email the company about how impressed I was and how grateful for Buzzy that I was.  And they sent me one for review, wahoo!!  Just in time for my other daughters 5-year well visit!  I messed up though, I left Buzzy’s ice pack wings in my freezer at home, so.much.regret.  But I did hold Buzzy® directly on the site for 30-60 seconds, then moved Buzzy® proximal to site keeping Buzzy’s switch/head toward the brain during injection.  My 5-year old did cry when she got her injection, but she was over it VERY fast.  Popped off the table and got ready for our departure!

You can purchase Buzzy on their website.  The company has other helpful devices as well.  Definitely check them out!  I believe Buzzy should be used by every doctor and hospital, not just the 5000+ currently using it!  And I am definitely of the 90% that would recommend Buzzy.  My pediatrician knew about it from working at CHOP and her nurse was amazed to observe how Buzzy worked.  I’ll be that “Buzzy-toting-mama” every time one of my 4 cherubs need a needle of any kind.  I am a believer!!!!
